FMP diary (WEEK END) 31 March

This week I planned on shooting in the green screen room and making a rough draft of the film to see what works and what doesn't work. Unfortunate circumstances caused the actor that was supposed to be in my final film and the test footage, not to be in college. So I worked on forced perspective instead to try out this technique to see if it worked.

After I filmed the test footage today, I also researched camera settings which will help me with the next shoot I do. I decided to do this due to the camera looking slightly blurry and not having sufficient depth of field. A thing I'm also going to change in the final shoot is to get a lower tripod as the one I tried was too high up. I overcame this temporarily by using what I had available e.g. books and an Ipad.

Below is the storyboard I created this week for the giants scene.

I watched this video to determine if forced perspective was a practical technique to use in my film. I think that forced perspective requires a lot of planning and thought. I will experiment with different forced perspective techniques. This will help me decide if this is an appropriate technique to use within my film

Above is my test footage that I filmed in the Royal Crescent in Bath. There were several obstacles that I noticed during filming. First of which was the light, the sun was too bright obscuring the screen making it very difficult to focus and get the settings correct on the camera. Also the location that I was filming in was very busy due to the time of day and the weather. I could not find a suitable spot to film where there weren't crowds of people, it was also very difficult to line up the actor in the foreground with the actor running in the background due to filming it and also being the giant.

In the screen shots of After Effects below, I tried boosting the giant up to be on the same level as the running actor. This was too difficult because the grass was obstructing some of the shoe. I tried doing this using the Roto Brush tool

Director :  Toby , two cups of tea on the set please and make it quick

Toby: ill be as quick as i can

Toby runs through the door , along the corridor .Mean while a delivery man comes up the stairs and crashes into Toby , sending toby flying onto the floor . The delivery man drops the paper he is  carrying . Toby is lying on the floor covered in paper s

The delivery man helps Toby get up , he is a bit confused and dazed. Toby then  runs into the kitchen
notices there are no tea bags , then runs out the door . Toby rubs his head in confusion when outside but continues to struggle on

Toby goes to the shop , comes out of the shop with tea bags .

Toby runs outside he hears stomping sounds ,looks side to side and cant see anything . Then looks up  shocked  , and starts running in the opposite direction . Toby carries on running continually looking behind him , then a giants hand picks him up and takes him out of shot .

Then all events that have happened up to this point rewind ,back to when Toby's on the floor

to do list 23/03 onwards

  • Make test shoot for giant scene
  • research runner and editors
  • watch the TV series about runners
  • watch the film about editing
  • interview Tobie about being a runner
  • make a questionnaire to ask old students for feedback about the media industry?

FMP

  1. Apply and blog how your proposed research techniques will support your understanding and development of your ideas.

I intend to research several different types of mediums which will range from an interview with a former runner, read about the job of a runner and familiarise myself with the type of jobs they do

FMP Research

I intend to research films that showcase the importance of editing and interesting and clever shots  -

"Don’t edit from knowledge, edit from feeling".

Famous Editors - Michael Khan - edited every Spielberg film since Close Encounters

"Pulp Fiction - is an example where the non-linear storyline complements the editing. If you made it in the normal timeline it wouldn't make sense".

(Sally Menke - Edited most of Tarantino's films up until her death)

The narrative will involve a film runner's day - I shall be interviewing Tobie Lang who was a runner on a range of different films for 4 1/2 years.

I intend to research several different types of mediums which will range from an interview with a former runner, read about the job of a runner and familiarise myself with the type of jobs they do. Below are some research links that have information about runners on film sets and I will familiarise myself with this information.

Editing techniques

Vsevolod Pudovkin noted that the editing process is the one phase of production that is truly unique to motion pictures. Every other aspect of film making originated in a different medium than film (photography, art direction, writing, sound recording), but editing is the one process that is unique to film.[citation needed] Filmmaker Stanley Kubrick was quoted as saying: "I love editing. I think I like it more than any other phase of film making. If I wanted to be frivolous, I might say that everything that precedes editing is merely a way of producing film to edit

Script for FMP Presentation

SLIDE 1
Hello, this is my presentation for my FMP.  My film will be called A Day In The Life Of A Runner.  I intend to make it a moving image film that has elements of PhotoShop.
My idea is a short film about the day in the life of a runner on a film set, but with a fantastical twist.
This project is designed so that I push myself out of my comfort zone and also work to my strengths. It is a chance to teach myself new techniques that I have not yet explored.

SLIDE 2
The film will have three visually distinct scenes: noir, shadow puppets and optical illusion (giant).
The film will start out as a runner is on a film set, then is asked to make a cup of tea.  This scene will be presented in audio only, with a black screen.  This is because the film would be too difficult to make believable that they were on an actual film set.
Then it transitions to video, where the runner comes through the door towards the camera.  He runs to the kitchen, there are no tea bags so he runs to the shop. The shadow puppet scene comes in where he is chased by zombies on his way to the shop.
Then he comes out of the shop, only to find that the floor is shaking due to a nearby giant.  He looks up, runs away, the giant picks him up then drops him, then he runs inside to make the tea.  The giant’s hand I will layer on top of the video using After Effects.  I will create the dropping sequence with an image that looks like someone falling for a split-second, then a shot of the runner on the floor.
Inside the kitchen, it will transition to a noir-style black and white film of him making the cup of tea.

These are the characters that are in the film:

  • Runner (main character)
  • Director and camera crew (only hear their voices in the intro scene)
  • Giant (only the hand is in view)
  • Zombies (shadow puppets)

  • SLIDE 3
I intend to research the three different elements of the film. (read off board)
I plan to start production with the shadow puppets scene as this will be the most complex and time-consuming.

    SLIDE 4
I have reccy'd certain locations and these will be the best suited to shoot the film.
The Royal Crescent has a large field, which will be perfect as it needs to be a long shot, because the giant's hand needs to be superimposed on top of the footage. This all needs to be filmed on a tripod because the giant's hand and the person running will be carefully matched.
McColls: I need a quiet corner shop, the majority of corner shops in Bath are too busy.

One of the things I am strong at is post-production, and I will use several post-production techniques and programmes within my FMP.

    SLIDE 5
These are realistic timescales that I plan to stick to.

    SLIDE 6
There are at least 2 ways I plan to implement feedback.
Weekly blog, because I want to record my progress, almost like a diary format
Test screening: peer review, because I want to explore target audience feedback.

    FMP inspiration analysis

For my FMP I will take aspects from this scene such as low light shots, interesting transitions (for example one continuous shot)  and maybe an atmospheric tone.
This inspires me because the low light shots combined with the black and white overlay are very atmospheric , it suggests dark themes , but not too depressing to look at .

This scene is clever because it shows a transition between each room in an interesting way it does this by panning through the walls .Therefore it  gives depth to the shot of the room and gives the illusion that it is all one take .

This is an interesting shot because the camera appears to go through the floorboards. This was done in two takes.

    designing my logo

The first brief was to  draw a logo without taking your pen off the paper. This is my least favourite logo I created this lesson. It's very simplistic and a bit boring.

The top logo is my favourite one because I experimented with different punctuation keys. The brief was create a logo with the Helvetica font. With < this symbol I arranged them to resemble an eye since I couldn't draw one and at the same time in keeping with the brief.
