conventions of silent films
Movies began silent because the restriction on technology prevented them from having synchronised sound. The film makers had to tailor aspects of the film such as the acting - the actors had to show exaggerated body language to help the viewer understand what was happening on screen and what the character is feeling. To get around having no dialogue title cards were used. They didn't have the technology to overlap audio tracks or synchronise sound.
As in Journey To The Moon (Melies 1902) the shot types used are standard long shots throughout the film. The only shot that gives the appearance of a close-up is when the moon takes up the whole frame. It gives the illusion that the camera is zooming in, but I believe the technique used to film this scene is that the actor is walking towards the camera in a dark room. Having researched I can confirm that the actor is being pulled towards the camera on a chair. This was captured using an early form of stop-motion called substitution splicing.
Buster Keaton, a silent movie actor, who is famous for doing all his own stunts. This would not be possible in modern film making because of health and safety, risk assessments, insurance, and the actors ability to perform the stunts. Buster Keaton didn't have the luxury of multiple takes because most of the shots involve things getting destroyed, film is very expensive, the stunts are very dangerous. Well the stunt double would be out of the question because it would be harder to synch the shots and takes. You'd have to get someone who looked identical to the actor or the audience would start to wonder why he was different.
I added 1930's esq music during the editing process. I was originally going to compose my own music on Garageband but I decided to not do so because of a lack of ability to create music that would have been good enough and which also would have set up he atmosphere of the movie. I got the music from youtube which was in the "creative commons", the link is here. The music I have used is non-diegetic and similar to the music in Spione.
